Built for the table
not the archives

Worldbuilding is a love letter to the people you play with. Skryrún is how that letter gets delivered — the right secret, to the right person, at the exact moment it changes everything.

The Philosophy

The GM is Odin.

I have always been drawn to Norse mythology — not for the battles, but for what sits underneath them. The idea that wisdom isn’t given, it’s earned through sacrifice. Odin hung himself on Yggdrasil for nine days, wounded by his own spear, not because someone forced him to — because he decided the runes were worth it. The hidden wisdom of the world was worth everything he had to give to see it.

When I thought about what it actually feels like to be a Game Master — the hours of preparation no player ever sees, the centuries of fictional history you built so one throwaway line at the table lands with the weight it deserves — I realized I already knew that story. Every GM is Odin on the tree. Not for power. For the knowledge that makes the game feel real — and for the friends at the table who get to feel it with them.

“Skryrún means to scry through the rune — to see the hidden wisdom of your world revealed at the exact moment it matters.”

— Brand philosophy

“Worlds are built for the people at the table, not the reader of the wiki. Every feature earns its place by making a real moment land — or it doesn’t ship. Restraint is the design. Presence is the point.”

— Our design values

The world is not the point. The characters living in it are the point. Skryrún is built on that inversion — and it changes every decision we make about what to build.

The Name

Skryrún — SKRY·roon

Skry is an archaic variant of “scry” — the act of magical far-sight. In TTRPG culture, scrying means seeing distant people, places, and events through a magical lens: crystal ball, pool of water, obsidian mirror. The GM scries their world. They see things that haven’t happened yet, remember things no player has ever witnessed, and hold the entire shape of the story in their head at once.

Rún is Old Norse for hidden wisdom, secret knowledge — the runes themselves. Odin hung on Yggdrasil for nine days and sacrificed his eye to gain knowledge of the runes, the hidden secrets of the universe. Every NPC secret, every faction conspiracy, every character-specific lore reveal is a rún waiting to be read. The accent on the ú is intentional — long “oo,” Norse authenticity, and a signal that this word belongs in a world worth building.

Together: scrying through the rune. Seeing the hidden wisdom of your world revealed — at the exact moment it matters. Not all at once. Not in a folder tree. At the right moment, for the right person, in the right session.

The Founder

Built by a GM. For GMs.

PJ — Founder of Skryrún

Founder

PJ

I’ve been rolling dice since 2001 — D&D 3.5 was the gateway, and I never found my way back out. Six years ago I stepped behind the screen permanently, running campaigns for friends and family across Daggerheart, D&D 5e, One D&D, and Call of Cthulhu.

I tried every tool. Notion felt like a notes app. WorldAnvil felt like a blog. Obsidian was a filing cabinet. None of them understood the specific shape of a GM’s brain — the way information needs to flow at the table, not just sit organised on a shelf. I needed something that could surface the right NPC in three seconds, show me what my players know versus what they don’t, and update after the session without demanding an hour of prep before the next one.

“Storytelling is a lost medium. TTRPGs keep it alive — not as performance, but as collaboration. Real emotions at a real table, shared between real people. That’s worth building for.”

— PJ

The moments that matter most at my table — a player going quiet because a character death hit differently than expected, the group erupting when a months-long conspiracy finally clicks into place — those moments happen because the story was held carefully. Skryrún is how I hold it — built by someone who will feel the consequences of every decision at a real table with real players.

The Values

What we believe

Built for the table

Every feature is tested against one question: does this help a GM run a better session tonight? Not a more organized world — a better night for the friends across the table. If it only serves the archives and never the people playing, we don't build it. The whole reason you built the world was to share it. Everything we build is aimed at that moment.

Characters are the story

The world is the stage. The characters — and the players behind them — are the story. Your world exists to create stakes, pressure, and meaning for specific people at a specific table. The best sessions aren't the ones the GM scripted perfectly. They're the moments that emerged from the table and landed on the real people in the room. Build for that.

Everything is connected

Type [[Entity Name]] anywhere and it links automatically. Every article knows what references it. The relationship web isn't an extra feature — it's the consequence of how articles are written. The wyrd builds itself as you write. You just have to start writing.

Mobile-first

Full editing and session reference on every device. Your world goes wherever the session is — not stuck on a laptop in another room. The session companion works on a phone, a tablet, or a screen the players can see. One subscription. Web, iOS, Android.

AI that knows your world

Not generic generation — world-aware AI that answers questions grounded in your own lore. "What do I know about the Amber Court?" answered from your articles, not a language model's training data. The rune speaks back in your world's voice, not a stranger's.

The Community

Built with the TTRPG world in mind.

The TTRPG community is one of the most creative, generous, and overlooked communities in gaming. Decades of worldbuilding, campaign design, and table craft — stored in notebooks, scattered across Google Docs, locked in GMs’ heads. Skryrún exists to give that knowledge a home.

We are building the infrastructure for community-driven content: adversary libraries seeded by players, world templates shared by GMs, and a marketplace where creators earn from the worlds they’ve built. The flywheel turns when the community teaches itself — and we’re here to make that possible.

Every piece of feedback, every bug report, every “can you add this?” shapes the roadmap. We are a small team building something we personally need — which means we understand exactly what’s broken in every tool that came before.

Community Adversary Library

Browse, import, and publish adversaries across all supported systems. Daggerheart-first content launches Phase 3.

Template Block Library

Pre-built content blocks that drop onto any article canvas. Personality, secrets, tavern keepers, political agendas — browse, drop, customise.

Worlds Marketplace

Publish your world for free or sell it. Every fork is attributed. Subscriber updates keep your buyers in sync as the world evolves.

The Manifesto

Worldbuilding is hard work.
Getting it to the table is the whole point.
Every secret has its moment. Every character has their story.
The friends you play with are why any of it matters.
Skryrún is where it all comes together.

Scry through the rune.

Start building tonight. The table will feel it by next session.

Free forever on Chronicler. No credit card required. 14 days of full Runekeeper access when you sign up.
